Hemoglobin Electrophoresis Cost

Human body has different types of hemoglobin. Out of these types, hemoglobin A, is present in healthy individuals and hemoglobin F is present in fetuses and newborns. Soon after birth, hemoglobin F gets replaced with A. Besides these, all other types of hemoglobin if found, suggest abnormalities. And hemoglobin electrophoresis is conducted to identify types of hemoglobin and related abnormalities.

Infants acquire abnormal types of hemoglobin by inheriting defective genes responsible for generating abnormal pattern of hemoglobin. A person with abnormal hemoglobin is very likely to suffer from a number of blood disorders. Some of the common illnesses that require Hemoglobin Electrophoresis for diagnosis are: Sickle Cell Anemia, Thalassemia etc.

Hemoglobin Electrophoresis is also performed on infants who are born to parents or families who have abnormal hemoglobin history. These children may be tested even when they show no symptom of above mentioned diseases.

Undergoing this test is very simple and requires no prior preparation. The test requires a small amount of blood that is collected from your arms through a venipuncture. A healthcare provider will tie your arm with an elastic band that allows blood to accumulate in one of the veins that gets swelled up. A needle is then used to draw out the required amount of blood. The punctured area is then covered with a cotton pad. The collected sample is then tested under laboratory conditions.

People who have undergone a blood transfusion or are suffering from severe iron deficiency, need to discuss the same with their doctors before opting for the test. These conditions may hinder accurate results and therefore discussing the same with doctors prior to the procedure is always suggested.
