Semen Analysis Test Cost

Semen analysis or sperm count test is carried out to determine a man's fertility by measuring the quantity and quality of the sperm produced. This test assesses three major factors: shape of sperm, sperm count and their motility. It also tests semen, the fluid that contains them.

A freshly retrieved semen sample is examined under microscope to determine the size and count and a range of other tests are conducted on the sample. Semen analysis test is often recommended when couples face problems conceiving. The test determines whether infertility is the reason.

For semen analysis test, a semen sample is collected in a collection cup. The sample needs to be maintained at room temperature and tested within an hour. The sample is then examined under microscope for morphology, count, motility, viability and volume. This helps the doctor to determine the exact cause, if any, of infertility. Semen analysis helps determine if a man needs treatments for infertility. This test is also often done to check the success of vasectomy. It also helps to determine if there is an infection in the reproductive tract.

Two to three samples need to be provided within two or three weeks as sperm count may vary even though the sample is from the same person. More than two samples are analyzed over a period of 2-3 months so as to provide results based on the average consistency.

Certain precautions need to be taken before collecting the sample. Any sexual activity should be avoided 3-4 days prior to the sample collection. This makes sure the sperm count is still high. No lubricants should be used as it affects the motility of the sperms. Avoid alcohol and caffeine for at least a week before the test.

Some of the reasons that result in infertility are hormonal imbalances, low motility that decreases the sperm's ability to reach the egg faster, abnormal morphology of the sperm. Infections such as sexually transmitted diseases, can also affect the sperm's health and count. Other causes are drug abuse, tobacco smoking, and occupational hazards such as exposure to heavy metals or chemicals. Doctors may ask patients to get FSH test, prolactin test or LH test done is semen analysis tests shows abnormal results.

Let your doctor know about any supplements or herbal medicines you may be taking. Any hormonal medication should be avoided.

There are no risks of semen analysis test.
