You may be advised to undergo stress test if you experience the following:

  • Sudden onset of chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Abnormal pulse rate
  • History of hypertension
  • Abnormal results of other diagnostic tests like angiography, ECG etc.

Stress test is also done as a follow-up investigation for patients who are undergoing treatment for a pre-existing cardiac disorder. Only a qualified cardiologist may perform a stress test.

Patients are required to visit a medical center or hospital offering modern diagnostic services in the field of cardiology. It is important to reach the place well in advanced of the designated time of the test. Patients need to be completely relaxed before stress test is performed. Their blood pressure and pulse rate are monitored throughout the test. Any abnormality in these parameters may affect the result of stress test.

A gel is applied on the skin over patient's chest and multiple electrodes are attached over the skin. Gel provides a good contact surface for the electrodes and helps in better conductivity of electrical impulses. Patients are then asked to walk on a treadmill at a pre-determined pace. This activity continues till heart rate reaches a specific level. Patients who are unable to perform any physical activity may receive a drug which will accelerate their heart rate to the desired level.

A doctor monitors the patient's cardiac activity throughout the duration of the test. Often an ECG (graphical recording of cardiac activity) is taken during stress test. Studying the ECG helps cardiologists interpret any disturbances in the cardiac muscle functioning.

Abnormal results after undergoing stress test require immediate medical attention. Patients who are asked to undergo stress test may also require other tests like angiography, 2D-Echo etc. Patients may be started on oral medication or may require surgical intervention in some cases. In some cases, abnormal result of stress test may require long term medical care.

Stress Test (TMT) FAQs
Q: What is a stress test?
A: Also known as treadmill test (TMT) or exercise test, a stress test evaluates the response of the heart under a certain amount of workload. It monitors the heart rate, pulse, BP, cardiac activity and resultant tiredness.
Q: Why is stress test required?
A: This test is ordered by the doctor if he/she sees signs & symptoms like chest pain, troubled breathing, palpitations, etc. Along with this, a stress test can also help detect narrowing or blockage of coronary arteries.
Q: How is a stress test performed?
A: The patient is either made to walk on a treadmill or ride a stationary bike with the ECG leads connected to his body. The intensity is gradually increased to a time the patient finds it difficult to do so. After some rest, the vitals are checked again and compared.
Q: Is there any special preparation required for a stress test?
A: Fasting for a few hours before the test is encouraged. Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol before the procedure day. Do tell your doctor about your past medical history and details of medications you have been taking.
Q: Is this test risky?
A: A stress test is a completely non-invasive procedure and hence very safe. Patients suffering from heart disorders still face a risk of severe angina, myocardial infarction, tachycardia and cardiac arrest in rare cases.
