MR Elastography in India

What is MR Elastography?

MR Elastrography (MRE) is a scanning process used to measure the stiffness in soft tissues . It is a non invasive method that utilizes elastic waves called as shear waves along with the magnetic resonance imaging techniques for the scanning process. The shear waves and the working of magnetic resonance helps your radiologist to learn about the mechanical properties of the soft tissues. Doctors can diagnose and study the characteristics of particular disease by using MR Elastography.

Procedure for MR Elastography

Before you begin with the MR Elastography process ensure that you remove any sort of accessories you are wearing. For example, jewelery, hair pins, watches, eye glasses, etc. Medical staff at your diagnostic center will give you a hospital gown to wear for the procedure.

You will be asked to lie down on a table. A small pad is placed on your body. The pad is used to pass low frequency vibrations on your liver. As these vibrations pass trough your liver, the rate of the speed of vibrations is calculated using a computer. In case of stiff tissues, these vibrations pass at a faster rate.

A system inside the computer uses the calculated measurements to generate a map depicted in variant colors that shows the level of stiffness of tissues present within your liver.

The procedure of the MR Elastography examination is performed as a part of your conventional MRI test. During any standards MRI procedure, the MRI test requires around 30-45 minutes for completion. As the MRE is the part of this MRI process, it requires at most 5 minutes.

Why is MR Elastography suggested?

Magnetic Resonance Elastography test is conducted in order to measure the stiffness in the tissues of your liver. This test is mainly recommended to patients who are suspected to have had a liver disorder.

For patients who suffer from liver fibrosis disease, MR elastography test is very helpful. Diagnosis of advanced level of fibrosis and scarring requires MR elastography test. This test prevents the chances of liver fibrosis from growing further. Early diagnosis can be helpful to treat and cure disease completely.

MR Elastography is also used to detect the severity of liver fibrosis disease and helps your doctor to decide the best treatment option for such health conditions. This examination also helps your doctor determine the progress in the liver fibrosis treatment disorder.

Advantages of MR Elastography

The following points suggest the advantages of MR Elastography process

  • It is used as an assessment tool to learn about the entire liver while the imaging or biopsy process is being performed
  • It is efficient and easier for obese patients
  • It is a non invasive procedure
  • It is a safe and painless process
  • It is preferred over biopsy procedures as patients find it more comfortable
  • Unlike other scanning tests, MR Elastography can detect fibrosis at its early stage
  • It is used to determine risks and complications related to the liver like accumulation of fluids in the abdomen region of your body
