The Double Marker test is one of the many pregnancy tests a pregnant woman has to undergo. It is usually done between 9 to 13 weeks of pregnancy. Mostly, it will be combined with an Ultrasound test. The doctor may recommend to do ultrasound first and based on the scan report, can schedule the test. Since pregnancy tests are scheduled according to the growth of the fetus, going for the test during the 12 weeks of pregnancy can help in identifying if the unborn child is likely to develop any sort of chromosomal imbalance or mental disorders.

The double marker test doesn't require any preparation for the expecting mother. As mentioned before, it is a plain blood test. However, the doctor should be informed about any medication the expecting mother may be on.
The double marker test is done with a blood sample. It checks for two markers namely, Free Beta hCG (human chorionic gonadotrophin) and PAPP-A (pregnancy-associated plasma protein A). 1 hormone and 1 protein in pregnant women is tested. Hence, the test gets it name from here.
The double marker test helps the doctor in establishing Down syndrome (trisomy 21) or Edwards syndrome (trisomy 18) in the fetus. Fetuses having an extra chromosome (47) are susceptible to get Down's syndrome. Chromosomal imbalances have high chances when the woman conceiving is above 35 years of age. This test is also useful in pinpointing possibilities of mental retardation, heart diseases and severe congenital defects in the unborn child. This test is done in the first trimester of pregnancy.
Test results are classified as screen positive and screen negative. Further, screen positive gets classified in the 1:10 to 1:250; whereas, 1:1000 or above is classed as “screen negative.” 25700 to 288000 mlU per ml is the normal range for a double marker test for women in all ages. Based on the results, if the double marker tests positive, the doctor may instruct further testing. Generally, pregnant women above 35 years of age carry a high risk of delivering a child with Down's syndrome. However, it is recommended even for younger age women. This test is extremely important, especially for a safe child-birth and prevention of any possible mental and physical defects in the expected child.
