Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) tests are conducted to determine the presence of any or both types of HSV virus in body. HSV infections result in formation of sores on the surface of skin. Sometimes, blisters may even appear on the inner tissue lining or mucous membrane. Although most people have a single bout of HSV infection, the chances for multiple infections in a life time cannot be ignored.
Out of the two forms of HSVs, HSV type 1 mainly affects the outer skin surfaces such as lips. HSV type 2 on the other hand infects the genitals. A doctor orders an HSV test when individuals develop sores mostly around the genital area. However, these skin problems may also be visible around the throat, nose and lips.
The two most popularly conducted HSV procedures are; HSV viral culture and HSV antigen detection test. Both these tests require collection of fluid that fills the herpes blister. This fluid needs to be collected from a fresh sore; approximately, 5-7 days old. The only reason behind this is that, presence of virus is more prominent in new blisters as compared to the old ones.
There is not much to prepare before hand for this test. However, if you have herpes infection in your vaginal lining or penis, then sexual contact needs to be avoided completely. Your health care provider will help you be at a comfortable position and then will use a cotton swab that is gently rub against a newly formed sore. The swab collects the fluid and cells which are then sent to a laboratory for testing.
