Troponin-I Test Cost

Troponin I test is a diagnostic feature which helps to determine the health of cardiac muscles. Troponin I is a protein released upon lysis(what is this) or damage to cardiac tissue. Increased levels of this protein are indicative of cardiac muscle degeneration and impending myocardial infarction.

A blood sample taken from a vein in the patient's upper arm is used to perform this test. The sample must be sent for testing immediately, since result of Troponin I test determines further medical treatment.

Troponin I test is usually done on an emergency basis as soon as patients start experiencing symptoms of cardiac distress. Some of these symptoms have been mentioned below:

  • Chest pain
  • Shooting pain in the left arm, left side of the back or jaw
  • Respiratory distress
  • Easy onset of breathlessness

If these symptoms do not resolve with adequate rest and medication, it is important to undergo some diagnostic tests which collectively form the 'cardiac risk marker profile.' Troponin I test is part of this profile, or may be performed individually as well.

The test results are based on the blood levels of a substance known as Troponin I. This substance is proteinaceous in nature. It is an essential component of cardiac muscles and helps in normal movement of these muscles. In case of cardiac muscle disintegration, troponin I is released into the bloodstream in excess amount. Therefore, elevated levels of troponin I are an indication of underlying heart disease.

Troponin I test is also indicated after a patient has suffered from myocardial infarction. Levels of the protein remain high for about 6-8 hours after suffering from heart attack. Blood samples are withdrawn at hourly intervals in such patients to determine levels of Troponin I. Steady decline in the levels is indicative of regeneration of cardiac muscles. Greater the levels of Troponin I, greater is the underlying damage to cardiac muscles.

Patients should undergo Troponin I test as soon as it is advised. This delay could lead to health complications that may have fatal outcome. Other blood tests like homocysteine, triglycerides, and scans like ECG, angiography, may be advised along with Troponin I test.

Abnormal levels of Troponin I are a cause of serious concern. It is important to consult with a cardiologist at the earliest to begin the required treatment. Oral medication or minor cardiac procedures like angioplasty may be advised to patients.

Troponin-I Test FAQs
Q: What is troponin-I?
A: It is a special protein found in skeletal and heart muscles. It has 3 forms, out which the cardiac form is exclusive to the heart muscles.
Q: What are the normal levels of troponin-I?
A: Troponin-I levels are normally less than 0.04 ng/mL in the body.
Q: What is the importance of this test?
A: Troponin-I levels can be detected in blood 3-6 hours after the onset of pain in the chest and can stay elevated in the blood for 5-9 days post pain. This is useful in detecting a potential heart attack.
Q: How is this test performed?
A: A sample of blood is taken from a vein and sent for further investigation in a lab.
Q: What do abnormal levels of troponin-I indicate?
A: Abnormal levels of troponin-I are indicative of pulmonary hypertension, angina, myocardial infarction, pulmonary embolism and congestive heart failure.
