What is MRI Angiogram?
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Angiogram is a type of diagnostic investigation which involves studying the blood vessels in a patient’s body in great detail. The investigation is also known as Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA).
A basic MRI scan focuses on all tissues in the body which are exposed to the magnetic field. MRA is a specialized form of MRI in which focus is only on the blood vessels and no other organs. Though other organs are outlined in an MRA as well, the magnetic field is concentrated more on blood vessels to observe for any unfavorable changes that may have occurred within.

Pre-Procedure
MRI is a fairly advanced diagnostic technique and requires more time than a blood test or an X-Ray. It also requires patients and doctor to follow certain precautions before the scan is performed. These precautions have been outlined below:
- A detailed physical examination is required for the patient prior to MRI Angiogram scan.
- Before the procedure, doctors will make sure they have a list of their patient’s detailed medical history and a list of medicines the patient might be consuming regularly.
- Female patients who are pregnant need to inform their doctor about the same. If pregnancy is in the planning, women should consult with their doctors about how long after the scan is it safe to conceive a baby.
- Patients who have undergone orthopedic surgery sometimes have nails and screws joining their bones together. This information should never be withheld from the doctor who prescribes MRI Angiogram.
- Patients who have a pacemaker, shunt, stent, cardioverter defibrillator or any other mechanical device fitted in their body should share the information with their doctor.
- Only after all these things have been cross verified, the patient can be deemed medically fit to undergo MRI Angiogram.
How is MRI Angiogram Performed?
The procedure of MRI Angiogram is described below in detail:
- On the day of procedure, the patient is expected to arrive earlier than the decided time at the diagnostic center. After arriving there, they are provided with a sterile surgical gown to wear.
- It is mandatory to remove all jewelery and metal accessories prior to undergoing the scan.
- Patients are made to lie flat on their backs on a bed which slides inside a cylindrical tube like structure. If the patient is scared of closed spaces or if the patient is a small child, sedation may be required to keep the patient from moving a lot while the scan is being performed.
- Once inside the scanner, a magnetic field of pre-determined strength is focused upon that part of patient’s body, the blood vessels of which are to be studied. Magnetic waves interact with particles of the patient’s blood. This results in emission of radio waves from the patient’s blood. Combined effects of radiowaves and magnetic waves lead to generation of images which can be used for diagnosing the patient’s health condition.
- In some cases, prior to the scan, a contrast dye is injected in the patient’s veins. Through the veins it gets circulated through the entire blood system, highlighting blood vessels in the process. Dye helps in enhancing the clarity of MRI scan.
- The entire process lasts for about 30-60 minutes. After scanning is complete, the patient may leave for home immediately.
Why is MRI Angiogram Required?
MRI angiogram or MRA is indicated in the following cases:
- Atherosclerosis
- Calcium or cholesterol deposits in the blood vessels
- Aneurysm
- Suspected hemorrhage or blood vessel rupture (Emergency MRA)
- Dissection of aorta
- Stenosis of blood vessels
- Varicose veins
- Kawasaki syndrome
- As a follow up investigation for any of the above mentioned disorders
What are the Precautions to be Followed after MRI Angiogram?
MRI Angiogram is not an invasive procedure, which implies that there are no surgical incisions needed to be given on the patient’s body. There is no specific list of precautions which need to be followed after MRA, but depending on every patient’s individual health condition, different precautions may be advised.
However, if contrast dye is used during the scan, following instructions are given to the patient to be followed after the procedure is completed:
- After the dye is injected, it takes about one week for it to be excreted completely out of the body. The dye is excreted through means of urine. Therefore, the patient has to remember to maintain toilet hygiene.
- Toilet should be cleaned properly after the patient has used it. Soap and disinfectant should be used to clean the patient’s used clothes.
- Patients should avoid sharing their clothes, handkerchief or other items of personal use.
- Hands should be washed after using the toilet.
- Care should be taken by patient’s family and caregivers to avoid coming in contact with the patient’s body fluids like saliva, sweat, urine, blood etc.
MRI Angiogram is a fairly advanced and complex diagnostic technique. It provides a much more accurate result in comparison to X-ray, sonography or CT Scan. The procedure is very safe, since there is no use of any harmful radiation. MRA has many advantages and is a helpful tool to diagnose many health conditions of the blood vessels.
It is important to know about the procedure before undergoing it, so that patients can prepare themselves accordingly. All pre and post procedure instructions should be heeded carefully as these directly affect the scan results. Patients should remember that MRI Angiogram involves usage of magnetic and radio waves. Though this is not harmful to patients, it is inadvisable to undergo the procedure without a doctor’s prescription.
