Procedure of Cervical Spine MRI

There is no pre-procedure preparation involved in MRI of cervical spine. However, if you are pregnant or diabetic, you should inform your doctor well before undergoing the MRI process.

Patients are asked to wear hospital gown before undergoing cervical spine MRI procedure. Before you begin with the imaging process, you are asked to remove any kind of metallic ornaments or accessories you are wearing around your neck. MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) involves strong magnetic fields that can be disturbed due to the presence of any metallic substance while the imaging is being carried out.

You have to lie down on a sliding, narrow table that moves inside a tunnel where the imaging of your body takes place. Certain types of cervical spine MRIs require a special type of dye. A contrast material or dye will be injected into the vein of your arm before your body is slided over the tunnel enclosure. The contrast material helps the radiologist to get a clearer picture of some specific parts of your cervical spine.

While the imaging process is under progress, the radiologist examines and notes down the results of the test. Cervical spine MRI lasts for about 30 to 60 minutes or more.

Why MRI of Cervical Spine is Suggested?

Cervical Spine MRI provides a complete visual image of the internal structures of your cervical spine. The cervical spine is surrounded with connective nerves and tissue bodies. MRI gives you a clear picture of these nerves and tissues present around the cervical spine.

The main purpose of undergoing an imaging process is to diagnose or examine cervical spine and its connecting tissues and nerves.

A cervical spine is used to diagnose the following issues:

  • Infections in your spinal areas
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Numbness in your lower back neck
  • Cancer of the spine
  • Birth defects of your spine
  • Spinal injury
  • Severe neck pain that cannot be treated using medical treatments
  • Weakness in your neck region
  • Severe sclerosis
  • Tumor in the spine

MRI provides better results than a CT scan to visualize and evaluate issues like herniated discs, abscesses, tumors, spinal stenosis, bone infections or any masses around the spinal cord. Doctor suggests an MRI instead of CT scan because there is a difference in the imaging results of each one of these. A CT scan can provide image of a fracture in the cervical spine, wheras MRI can identify even the subtle changes in the bone structure casued due to the presence of tumor or infection.
