Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of brain is an investigative technique in which magnetic waves and radio waves are used in combination, to generate an image of the patient’s brain. These images are studied to detect any underlying structural or functional abnormalities in the patient’s brain. It is an absolutely painless procedure and does not require any surgical incision or invasive procedure.

Why is MRI Brain Suggested?
MRI scan of the brain may be indicated if any of the following health conditions is suspected:

How is MRI Brain Performed?
The patient is made to lie on a bed which slides inside a spacious wide tube like structure. Within this tube, a magnetic field of pre-determined strength has been generated. The field is focused only on the head of the patient. Magnetic waves interact with particles present inside patient’s body, which leads to generation of radio waves. Interaction between radio waves and magnetic waves produces a series of images of the brain. These images are studied in order to provide an accurate diagnosis about the patient’s health condition. The procedure takes about half an hour to one hour for completion.
MRI brain scan is performed in presence of other conditions and symptoms as well as and when the doctor sees it fit. It is advisable to undergo the procedure only under a doctor’s prescription.
