Why is MRI of Cervical Spine Suggested?

Your doctor may suggest you a cervical spine MRI if he/she suspects the following situations:

  • Radiculopathy, a condition caused by compression of a nerve inside the spinal cord, which results in numbness, tingling or inflammation of the region supplied by that nerve
  • Any trauma to the spinal cord, especially cervical injuries
  • Spinal disc herniation
  • Cervical spine fractures
  • Presence of tumors in the cervical spine
  • Multiple sclerosis, where nerves lose their protective covering (myelin sheath) and result in a variety of symptoms
  • Suspected infection in the spine

Cervical spine MRI is a completely safe and harmless procedure. You are made to lie down on a mobile table which will go inside the tunnel like structure of MRI machine. A coil type frame is placed around your neck which helps to concentrate the magnetic field around the cervical spine. With this, clear images are created on a computer screen.

There are a few things which should be kept in mind before undergoing a cervical spine MRI. Depending on your present health status, your doctor may want an MRI with a contrast medium. This is a special dye injected into your veins which helps to view images more accurately. If you are suffering from a kidney problem, do let your doctor know, for this dye should be able to get filtered safely from the kidneys.

Metals and magnets have a very ‘attractive’ relation with each other. The magnetic field produced by an MRI machine is strong enough to interact with metallic parts in your body. This includes dental implants, cardiac pacemakers, insulin pumps, cochlear implants or aneurysm clips. As a result, their function can be altered. Usually, a series of questions are asked by the radio-technician before the MRI starts. Answer each question to the best of your knowledge.
