What is CT Scan Brain?
Computerized Tomography (CT) of brain is a diagnostic test which makes use of X-rays to create images of brain. These images are then studied to determine whether any abnormal changes have taken place in the brain or any of its parts.
CT scan is a much more advanced test than the regular X-ray. An X-ray film will show in detail only those abnormal changes occurring in bones and joints. A CT scan on the other hand, clearly shows organs like brain, lungs, liver, muscles, blood vessels etc., in great detail. Therefore, when the internal organs are to be studied in more detail, CT scan is preferred over X-ray or USG (Ultrasound scan).

Why is Brain CT Scan Suggested?

Procedure:
CT Scan of brain is done under the supervision of a trained technician and a radiologist. The patient might be given an intravenous injection consisting of a contrast dye. This dye circulates through the means of blood and reaches the brain. Here, it is absorbed by blood vessels of the brain. The dye enhances the clarity of images which are produced during CT scan. Patients are made to lie on their back on a bed which slides into the scan machine. The machine is a wide hollow structure. X-rays are focused on the patient’s brain and consecutive images are taken. The images can be studies in detail to diagnose the patient’s health condition.
CT scan involves use of high concentration of X-rays. Pregnant women, small children, patients with cardiac conditions or history of cancer, may not be the most suitable candidates for CT scan. Hence, this investigation should be done only if prescribed by a doctor. Patient should take care to provide the doctor with a complete medical history before the scan is done. Following all pre and post procedure instructions makes it easier for the investigation to be carried out. It also helps to provide a better and more accurate diagnosis.
