MRI of cervical spine is used to study the top most portion of vertebral column lying in the patient’s neck. Magnetic waves penetrate the skin and other tissues to reach the vertebral column. Here they interact with the patient’s body particles. This interaction leads to emission of radio waves form patient’s body. A combination of radio and magnetic waves helps in obtaining a clear view of the patient’s cervical spine.

Why is MRI Cervical Spine Suggested?

Following are the indications where MRI of cervical spine is needed to be done:

  • Cervical Spinal Stenosis
  • Cervical disc prolapse
  • Recurring stiffness and pain in the neck
  • Cervical vertebral joint arthritis
  • Cervical spinal tumor
  • Traumatic impact to the neck
  • As a follow up method for any of the above mentioned health conditions
  • Cervical tissue biopsy can be done under MRI scan guidance

The procedure of MRI cervical spine is explained below:

  • The patient is asked to lie down on a flat surface in a position so that their neck can be scanned properly.
  • The flat surface then slides inside a hollow tube or between two large metal plates, where a magnetic field of pre-determined intensity has been generated.
  • The scanning helps to get a clear view of the cervical spine clearly.
  • At times, a contrast dye is injected into the patient’s blood circulation prior to the scan. The dye is absorbed by the cervical spinal tissue and this provides greater clarity while studying the scan reports.
  • The entire procedure can last for about 30-60 minutes.

After the procedure patients can go home immediately. The procedure is more advanced than X-Ray and sonography. It comes with a set of restrictions which need to be followed. Therefore, the procedure should be done only with a doctor’s advise and prescription. A successful outcome is possible only if all instructions about the procedure are followed well.
