What is the Procedure of Lumbar Spine MRI?

The patient is made to lie down either in face-up or face-down position on a table that slides into the MRI machine for scanning. You need to notify the doctor if there is any device implant you have undergone for any other condition as then alternate scanning method can be used in place of MRI. The entire procedure is done in an hour. Noise-canceling headphones are given sometimes to distract the patient from hearing whirring sounds inside the MRI machine.

Why is Lumbar Spine MRI Suggested?

A lumbar spine MRI is ordered by the doctor for the following reasons:

  • Spinal surgery – A lumbar spine MRI may be suggested if you are scheduled for any surgery related to spinal issues. This is for examining the extent of the infected or injured part before the actual surgery day.
  • Spinal conditions – Tumors, swelling, injuries, inflammation of spine can be diagnosed by the doctor by ordering a lumbar spine MRI.
  • Lower back pain – Intense pain originating from lower back followed by bout of fever can also be reason enough for undergoing lumbar spine MRI.

Other than above circumstances, a lumbar spine MRI is also useful when people suffer from numbness and pain in leg area.

Lumbodorsal MRI – What is it?

Thoracolumbar fascia also known as lumbodorsal fascia is a tissue that covers the ribcage from behind.

The MRI of lumbodorsal area is just like any other standard MRI procedure. Images of areas of tissues and nerves surrounding the lumbodorsal region are generated when magnetic waves are focused on that area.

Lumbosacral MRI – What is it?

The lumbosacral MRI involves generating images of lowermost region in spine comprising of vertebrae, spinal cord and nerves covering those parts. 3D images of these areas are created when electromagnetic waves interact with the tissues in lower back region.

The patient is made to enter the MRI machine for scanning. Several sets of images are generated through this procedure which is a completely painless one.

A lumbar MRI is an effective scanning technology when back-pain and injuries are to be investigated. It is also a less time-consuming procedure and patient can go about his routine work after undergoing lumbosacral MRI.
