MRI scan makes use of a combination of magnetic waves, emitted by a magnetic field of varying intensity. Magnetic field is created within a hollow tube like structure (closed MRI), or it can be created between a large loop like structure (open MRI). For MRI of Lumbar Spine, the patient is made to lie down in such a way, that his/her lumbar back gets exposed to the magnetic radiation. The magnetic waves then interact with body cells in such a way, that radio waves are generated. Interaction between magnetic and radio waves produces a series of images which are captured on computer screen. These are later used by doctors to come to a conclusive medical diagnosis.
Magnetic field created for performing MRI scan is of varying strength depending upon the patient’s health condition and area of the body to be studied.
