What is MRI Venogram?
MRI Venogram is also referred to as MRI Venography. It is the study of veins and arteries in the body via MRI imaging.
MRI Venogram makes use of high frequency radio-waves and a contrast agent that helps the doctor view his patients’ vein more clearly. This procedure helps the doctor in detecting and investigating disorders and abnormalities of blood vessels. This then makes deciding further line of treatment for patient easier. It also is used in detecting blood clots within veins and during bypass and stenting surgeries.

Pre-procedural instructions
You are asked to sign a consent form before the test. You need to alert the technician if you wear dentures, any prosthetic implant, cardiac pacemaker, or have any tattooed body-part.
If you are a pregnant woman, you need to alert the doctor beforehand. You need to inform the doctor if you are allergic to any contrast agents. Also discuss if you were having any illness from the recent past. Any medication you may be on, such as prescription medicine, supplements, blood-thinners etc., needs to be told to the doctor. You are also asked to wear loose and comfortable clothing so as not to experience discomfort during scanning.
How is MRI Venogram done?
You are made to change into a hospital gown. The procedure is roughly similar to an MRI Scan. An MRI scan entails, focusing magnetic waves on the intended bodypart for imaging. The procedure begins after you lie down on an X-ray table. You are asked to remain absolutely still in the scanning time span of 30-45 minutes.
In case of MRI Venogram, the scanning is of the veins in any body-part say, brain, legs, arms, spine etc. Contrast agent is injected into the person’s body through his arm. This helps in better visualization of the nerves. Images are taken out at timed intervals, as and how the contrast dye flows into the veins. There are loud whirring sounds because of magnets moving to and fro. You can play music of your choice throughout the scan.
You can alert the technician operating the MRI machine in case of any discomfort. The technician checks your heart-rate, body temperature and blood pressure immediately after the imaging.
After your MRI Venogram:
You cannot drive home yourself, if you are on sedation medication. The contrast dye needs to flow out of your body too. For that you need to consume plenty of water and fluids. The doctor will let you know when you can expect the results. Based on the results, further treatment therapy can be finalized. Doctor may also discuss if you require a follow-up examination.
Alert the doctor immediately if you experience fever, bleeding from the region where contrast was inserted or pain or redness coming from the same place.
