Pathology is a wide area of medical science. It studies your disease in general using lab medicines and equipment. In terms of learning, pathology has various subjects that involve general medical pathology, psychopathology, pathology in non-humans and overlap with various other diagnostic procedures.
General medical pathology is divided into sub-categories; namely, anatomical pathology, molecular pathology, clinical pathology and oral & maxillofacial pathology. Overlap pathology involves other diagnostic procedures like biopsy, imaging, endoscopy etc. Using one test or combination of more than one test, sample of the affected part of your body is collected for pathological analysis. This type of diagnosis falls under the overlap category of pathology.
Anatomical pathology concerns with anatomy based microscopic, immunologic, tissue level, gross, chemical, molecular levels and to the level of whole body. Hence, the sub-category of pathology is sub-divided according to these levels of learning.
Cytopathology field learns about a disease concerning cells. To diagnose about cancer cells, inflammations, cerebrospinal disorders, thyroid lesions, etc., tests under this category are required. Body fluids or tissue samples are mainly collected from the patient's body to learn about the disease. Diagnostic tests like tissue biopsy, imaging tests, blood tests, lumbar puncture, etc. are performed for cytopathology.
Dermapathology field is an anatomical learning of disease on a skin structure level. Disorders like skin cancer, skin infections, inflammations, burns, and all types of diseases affecting the skin structure are studied under this category. Sample collection of tissues using biopsy test, imaging, etc. is performed as a part of diagnosis at such times.
Neuropathology is another technique use to study anatomic behavior of your nerves. To analyze the properties and functioning of nerves, skin biopsies, tissue biopsies, functional testing, scan tests, lumbar puncture and many such diagnostic tests can be conducted.
Pulmonary pathology, renal pathology, surgical pathology and many other system specific pathologies are studied for a specific organ or system associated with the organ.
Clinical pathology deals with study of medical areas like hematology, immunology and radiology. For studying such areas of sciences, blood examination, evaluation techniques of various other body fluids, etc. are performed. Blood examinations can measure level of vitamins, minerals, hormones, etc. from your body.
Molecular pathology is the analysis of tissues, organs and body fluids on molecular levels. It is a combination of genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology and proteomics (study of proteins). Congenital disorders are mainly studied under this pathological field. DNA test is a part of molecular pathology.
