The lens is contained in a lens capsule. During the process, the cloudy lens and the front portion of this capsule gets removed. However, its posterior end is not tampered, so as to prevent vitreous gel from flowing forward to reach the pupil. This is done to avoid additional problems.
Earlier, some local anesthesia in the form of injections were given to patients prior to operation. These were very painful and were the main reason for patients to fear these otherwise easy procedures. However, now several numbing eye drops are administered into the eyes in place of those painful local anesthesias.
Sound waves or lasers are used to break the cataract lens and capsules into small pieces which are removed by suction. The incisions in this area are carried out so accurately that they get closed by simply placing the IOL in its proper position. Very few or no external stitches are required in this procedure.
Cost of Cataract Eye Surgery: It is difficult to estimate the exact cost of this surgery as it is largely dependent on the type of lens used and sometimes the hospital as well. However it can be roughly calculated to lie in between INR 5,000 to INR 1,50,000
Post operation, patients are required to wear a protective shield over their eyes for several days. Some eye drops are prescribed for few months after operation that need to be administered on regular basis as suggested by your physician.
