Sinus surgery involves the removal of any blockage in the drainage path of sinuses. This blockage may be caused by infected damaged tissues, a dislocated bone in the path that is present by birth or any foreign object that is blocking the nasal path. Mostly, this physical ailment is treated with medicines. It is only when this disease is highly severe and becomes chronic, that surgeons recommend surgical treatment.

There are two types of sinus surgeries. One is the endoscopic surgery where surgeons usually use a thin tool called endoscope that is inserted inside the patients nose. This helps to detect and remove any foreign particle that is blocking the nasal path. Second is chronic sinus surgery that is carried out in situations where these blocks are the result of formation of pus or inflammation of facial bones or worst cases of brain abscess. In this process, an incision into the nasal path is done through mouth or sometimes through facial skin.
Some carry the misconception, that once the surgery is done, they are sure of having no future complexities related to this. Well, this is wrong and serves as the reason for many to go for a second operation that is far more complex and painful. Sinus surgeries often come with series of medications post operation. These medicines are required to be taken for long periods to avoid post operative complications. These operations are successful when they are followed by proper medication and home treatments.
Earlier, sinus surgeries were followed with saline rinses that removed sinuses and associated bacteria. Today, many surgical centers are using a device called Hydrodebrider System. This washes out these bacteria more efficiently as compared to traditional methods.
