Kidneys are instrumental organs responsible for waste management and elimination of toxins from the body. Smooth functioning of kidneys is extremely instrumental for good health. Any hindrance in functioning of kidneys due to stone formation necessitates surgery for kidney stone removal. Kidneys are responsible not only for waste excretion, but also for regulating blood pressure and red blood cell count, maintaining electrolytes and water balance in the body.
Kidney stones are formed in the body when, there is an imbalance of elements in the urine. Stones also are a result of inadequate water and fluid consumption. When stone formation is abysmal, the doctor may prescribe medication for passing the stone naturally. But when, the stones are of larger size, surgery is recommended for extracting them. Stones when between 5-10 mm require surgery to remove them. The medical term for denoting this process of stones removal from kidney, liver and gall bladder is known as lithotripsy.

Lithotripsy, also known as Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL), lasts for about 45 minutes to an hour. High energy shock waves access the stones present in your kidney to break them down in minute form. They can then be passed off during passage of urine. There are chances that the patient may need more than one session to treat the kidney stones completely.
Post operation, patients should drink lots of water, preferably 2.5-3 liters fluids and equal amount of water to keep the stones from redeveloping. Taking complete rest and prescribed medicine is important too. Avoiding foods like cashews, chocolates, coffee, soy products, spinach, tea and chocolates which contain oxalate in high amounts, helps in keeping stones from coming back. Pistachio nuts, tuna fish, dry fruits, avocados and bananas are few sources of foods rich in vitamin B. Their consumption can avoid recurrence of kidney stones.
Also, it is essential to contact the doctor when the patients experience symptoms such as fever, difficulty in breathing, pain in the chest, blood in urine and extreme back pain.
