Below discussed are some procedures that are performed to treat common ailments related to this area:

Angioplasty and stenting: This surgical treatment is performed on narrowed or blocked arteries and veins. Medically, this physical ailment is termed as arterial atherosclerosis. In this method, a non inflated balloon like structure known as balloon catheter is attached through a thin wire. It is then moved through blood vessels to reach the narrowed location.

The balloon is then inflated to an appropriate size, so as to release blockage or widen the area. This facilitates improved blood flow. Finally, the balloon is emptied and removed. A tube like structure known as stent may also be used during the process to ensure that the blood vessels remain open throughout. However, it is an optional step that may be skipped when not required.

Carotid Endarterectomy(CEA): Endarterectomy is carried out to remove degenerative deposit on inner walls of artery. Carotid is the term used in combination, when the process is carried out specifically for carotid artery walls of neck. The unwanted deposit on artery walls are made up of cholesterol, calcium, fibrous tissue etc. and is known as plaque. This procedure is very essential to prevent fatal strokes.

This process is carried out by making an incision on superficial muscles present on sides of your neck. Carotid arteries are then clamped to prevent blood flow through it. The incision exposes arteries with plaques. This artery is then cut and the deposits are peeled of by your surgeon. After the process, both your arteries and neck muscles are stitched. This process takes about 2 hours to get completed.

Open aortic Surgery: This surgery is performed to treat most of the aortic disorders. For curing ascending thoracic aorta, an incision is made on chest to open the breastbone. In case of descending aorta, an incision is made on side of your chest. If the problem is restricted to abdominal aorta, incisions are made on sides of abdomen only.

While treating ascending aorta only, bypass machines are required. For the other two cases, only temporary clamping is sufficient. Surgeries involving blood vessels leading to brain are quite severe and therefore, circulation is seized for that particular duration.

Once the faulty aorta is exposed, the surgeon clamps it and removes the defected part. A synthetic graft is then used in place of the removed aorta. Clamps are then slowly removed and blood circulation is restored.

Patients who undergo vascular surgery play an important role in their own recovery. Post operations, patients are prescribed blood thinners in different dosage and combination. Surgeons need to continuously monitor the intake of these medicines. Many patients fail to maintain continuous follow up with their surgeons that leads to discontinuity in monitoring these blood thinning medicines. This may lead to serious blood clotting that may get fatal sometimes.
