Sputum and blood are the two most commonly collected samples for an AFB culture. You may be asked to deliver one or both of these samples.

If you are preparing for sputum collection, make sure that you brush and wash your mouth prior to sample collection. Using mouthwash is strictly prohibited now. Do not eat or drink anything before you collect the sputum. Breath deeply and then cough out the required sputum in a container given to you by your doctor or lab technician.

If you are immediately visiting the lab to deliver the sample, refrigeration is not required. However, if you plan to deliver the same some time later, refrigeration is needed. 24 hours refrigeration is permissible.

On the other hand, blood sample collection is always carried out in a clinic or lab. Your lab technician will collect the required sample through a venipunture. The procedure is simple, where an elastic band is tied to the upper arm that allows accumulation of blood in veins. A needle is then inserted that collects the required blood sample.
