How is Ammonia Test Performed?

Patients who require ammonia test are required to visit a pathology lab during a specific time of the day. Alternatively, a technician can also be arranged to visit the patient's house for sample collection.

Following steps are involved in performing ammonia test:

  • Patients will be given specific instructions before ammonia test. This could include dietary and medicinal restrictions.
  • Blood sample is collected either from a vein in the patient's arm or an arterial sample is used.
  • A sterilized container filled with anti coagulant agent is used to store the blood sample.
  • Till the sample is not tested, it is stored in a cool and dry place away from sunlight or any artificial light.
  • Advanced and highly calibrated equipment are used to test the sample and determine blood ammonia levels.
  • It takes a few days to obtain the results for ammonia test.

Patients are discharged to go home immediately after the test. There are no risks or complications involved with ammonia test. Patients may experience temporary pain and swelling in the area of arm from where blood sample is collected. A doctor should be contacted if these symptoms fail to subside.

Why is Ammonia Test Required?

Ammonia is a normal by-product of protein metabolism. It is synthesized when protein is broken down by digestive enzymes. In case of liver dysfunction, protein metabolism gets disturbed, leading to accumulation of excess ammonia. Disorders like liver cirrhosis, liver failure, fatty liver syndrome, hepatocellular carcinoma, are responsible for elevated levels of ammonia.

It is the function of kidneys to convert ammonia into urea and excrete it via urine. Kidney dysfunction is also responsible for disturbed levels of ammonia. Disorders like chronic renal failure, hydronephrosis, nephrotic syndrome, may alter blood ammonia levels.

Elevated levels of ammonia are apparent due to symptoms like weakness, dizziness, confusion, reduced mental capacity. Abnormal increase in levels of ammonia are evident by more serious symptoms like comatose condition, incoherent speech, etc.

Which Other Tests May be Advised with Ammonia Test?

Other tests which may be required along with ammonia test include liver function test, kidney function test, and scans of liver or kidney or both.

Abnormal results of ammonia test indicate serious underlying health issues and should be reported to a doctor immediately.

Ammonia Test FAQs
Q: What can be diagnosed through the ammonia test?
A: i) Functionality of the liver ii) performance of liver treatments in cases of serious disorders like cirrhosis iii) acute liver failure and its prognosis iv) Reye syndrome and other childhood disorders and v) ammonia level in cases of high calorie intravenous (vi) nutrition (hyperalimentation).
Q: What could affect the ammonia test results?
A: i) Straining exercises performed just before taking the test ii) use of medications that increase or decrease blood ammonia levels iii) smoking and alcohol consumption iv) consumption of low or high calorie protein diet.
Q: Why does ammonia level rises in the blood?
A: Due to major liver diseases such as hepatitis and cirrhosis which restrain the liver to convert ammonia into urea, which is eventually discarded via urine.
Q: What are the standard normal levels of ammonia?
A: Newborns: 90–150 mcg/dL; children: 40–80 mcg/dL; adults: 9.5–49 (mcg/dL).
Q: What do abnormal ammonia test results mean?
A: Existence of illnesses like gastrointestinal bleeding, congestive heart failure, metabolic alkalosis, leukemia, muscular exertion, etc.
