ANA test is a blood test to determine the levels of anti nuclear antibodies present in the body tissues. This test is very helpful in diagnosing various auto immune disorders.

In normal cases, antibodies are synthesized by the immune system in order to protect the body from any foreign toxic influences. Auto immune disorders usually affect many systems, therefore the symptoms are varied in every case. Patients suffering from recurrent joint pains, skin rash, psoriatic lesions, excessive dryness of eyes, swelling, deformity, and reddish discoloration of joints, are some symptoms suggestive of autoimmune disorders. These symptoms could be present individually or in combination with one another. Most of the times these symptoms do not subside with medication, which makes the physician think of autoimmune disorders as the probable diagnosis. Such cases can be diagnosed with the help of ANA test.
ANA test is performed at specific pathology laboratories which are equipped with highly sensitive and accurate instruments. Patients may visit the lab or have a technician visit them at home for sample collection. Venous blood sample is collected from the patient for this test.
Patients are asked to sit in a relaxed position and an elastic band is tied around the arm just above the elbow. This helps the veins to become taut and blood sample can be collected easily. Patients may experience temporary pain and swelling at the site of injection, which recedes within a few hours.
Systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren's syndrome, are some disorders that can be diagnosed by performing ANA test. Patients may also be required to undergo other tests like TPO test, X-ray, MRI scan, DEXA scan etc. along with ANA test.
This test is not performed at every pathology lab, hence patients must consult with their doctor before undergoing the test. Patients should follow all pre and post procedure instructions in order to obtain accurate test results.
