Bone scan involves use of nuclear medicine to determine abnormal metabolic activity in the bone. Nuclear medicine test produces high quality images of internal parts of body with the help of tiny amounts of radioactive substance.
In most of the cases, bone scan is performed to detect presence of cancerous cells and to check effectiveness of ongoing cancer treatment. It is a painless procedure and does not reveal any major side-effects. The amount of radioactive substance used in this procedure is way too small as compared to radiation emitted by X-rays.

Bone scan is generally performed by a radiologist- doctor who specializes in nuclear imaging test to diagnose diseases. If you are wearing any jewelry or metallic objects, you need to remove them and change into hospital gown before the scan.
To perform bone scan, tiny amount of radioactive substance called as tracer is injected into the body through vein in the arm. This tracer travels through whole body and gets absorbed in the parts where cancerous cells are present. It usually takes time period of one to four hours for the bones to absorb tracer. During this time, you are made to drink large amount of water in order to remove radioactive material that has not been absorbed by the cells. The excess radioactive material leaves the body via urine.
After four hours, you are made to lie down on your back on examination table. A large scanning camera will be placed above your body to record images. It will move slowly around your body to capture images from different angles. Radiologist may even ask you to change positions to get elaborate and detailed pictures. It is recommended that you don't move while images are being captured as it will create blur images.
It takes maximum two days for complete elimination of radio-active material from the body. Drinking lots of water will accelerate the process by flushing out toxins from the body.
You need not make any special preparation prior to the scan. You can consume a normal diet, but avoid foods that are heavy to digest like fried foods and over spicy foods. Also, let the doctor know if you are taking any tablets that contain elements like bismuth or barium. These elements can interfere with the radio-active material, thereby affecting test results. Doctor will advice you to not take these tablets before the scan.
Pregnant women and lactating mothers also need to inform doctor about their condition. Radio-active material can contaminate mothers milk and hence, some extra precautions have to be taken prior to the test. One can resume their daily activities including driving immediately after bone scan. If there are any complications after the scan, consult with doctor as early as possible to prevent further complications.
