Cryptococcal infection tends to occur in people who are low on immunity or who are suffering from chronic health conditions like HIV, cancer etc. Therefore, patients with these health conditions become potential candidates to undergo Cryptococcal antigen test.

For Cryptococcal antigen test, blood from the patient's vein is withdrawn under sterile conditions. It is kept mixed with agents which prevent it from clotting. If cerebrospinal fluid is used, it is withdrawn with great precaution. Utmost care is taken so that the spinal cord remains undamaged. These body fluids are then tested for presence of Cryptococcus.

If the test is positive, then it is repeated using more diluted concentrations of the specimen taken from the patient till the titre is obtained. Titre is indicative of the intensity of the infection. Negative test results are not be neglected if the patient is symptomatic. Also, if only one specimen has been tested and the result is negative, repeating the test may be considered.

Earlier, the body fluids received from the patient were subjected to microscopic study or were cultured to detect the presence of cryptococcus. Antigen test is far superior than these methods as its results are quicker and it is more sensitive to the presence of crypctococcus than culture or microscopic studies.

Cryptococcal Antigen Test FAQs
Q: What are the different types of tests to detect presence of Cryptococcus?
A: Presence of cryptococcus is detected by performing a fungal culture test or by checking for presence of Cryptococcal antigen and anti-body.
Q: Which disorders can be diagnosed by performing Cryptococcal Antigen test?
A: Cryptococcal Antigen test helps in diagnosis of fungal meningitis. Positive results in absence of any symptom of meningitis may be due to other diseases like HIV, T.B., cystic fibrosis, where immunity is greatly compromised.
Q: When should Cryptococcal Antigen test be repeated?
A: Cryptococcal antigen test should be repeated if test results are normal despite presence of relevant symptoms of cryptococcal meningitis. Despite positive results, repetition of tests is required to assess the intensity of infection in patients.
Q: What is the correct method to store tissue samples obtained for Cryptococcal Angiten?
A: Venous blood or Cerebrospinal Fluid are the most preferred samples to perform Cryptococcal Antigen test. The samples are stored in sterilized glass containers and corked tightly to avoid contact with atmosphere. Blood samples are invariably mixed with anti-coagulants to prevent clot formation. Samples are stored in cool and dry places away from sunlight.
Q: Which diagnostic tests are usually advised along with Crytococcal Antigen test?
A: Cryptococcal Antigen test may be accompanied with C.B.C test, CD4 count, Meningococcul Antigen test, HIV titres etc.
