HCV Antibody Test Cost

HCV Antibody test is a blood test checking for the presence of antibodies against Hepatitis C virus. This test can be performed at any pathology lab which is equipped with advanced technology and instruments of high calibration. A venous blood sample collected from the patient is required to check for presence of HCV antibodies.

HCV infection has an ability to remain silent and therefore, undetected for years together. Only when the liver has sustained considerable damage, does the infection become evident due to development of symptoms.

Hepatitis C is one of the common infectious disorders of the liver. HCV virus spreads through the mode of infected blood. Patients are most likely to get infected owing to a faulty blood transfusion. Blood is examined for presence of any infection before transfusion. HCV infection could slip the attention of pathologists if proper examination techniques are not used while screening the blood which is to be transfused. Transfusion of infected blood will cause the virus to enter a healthy person's bloodstream.

Given below are the symptoms of HCV infection:

  • Hemorrhagic tendency
  • Yellow discoloration of skin
  • Dark yellow urine
  • Chronic digestive disturbances
  • Brackish stool

If these symptoms are ignored for long, the conditions worsen to include liver cirrhosis, hepatic encephalopathy, ascites etc. These disorders could have fatal outcome if not treated immediately.

HCV antibodies are synthesized in patients suffering from the infection as a response to the virus. The antibodies fend off the virus and try to curb the damage that will be done. Test results for the same are either positive or negative. No numerical value is used to determine the amount of antibodies.

A positive test indicates presence of HCV infection, but a negative test may not essentially mean absence of infection. Test results could also be negative if the patient has been infected very recently, and the immune system has not yet started synthesizing antibodies. If the patient does not have any history of blood transfusion and yet tests positive for HCV antibodies, he/she is advised to undergo the test again.

Other than HCV antibody test, patients may also be required to undergo blood tests to test for liver function and scans like USG, MRI and CT scan of the liver.
