Hemoglobin test is a simple pathology test that checks levels of a protein component of the same name present in human blood. Hemoglobin is an important component of blood. The vital function of carrying oxygen to all body parts is carried out by hemoglobin. These are some of the commonest symptoms which prompt a physician to prescribe hemoglobin test.
The test is performed in almost every pathology laboratory. A venous blood sample is collected from a vein in the patient's upper arm. The blood sample is mixed with anti coagulants to prevent blood clot formation. Test results are obtained by studying the blood sample carefully using highly accurate instruments.
Ideal range of hemoglobin is as follows:
Adult men: 13.5-17.5 gm/dL
Adult women: 12 to 15.5 gm/dL
Hemoglobin levels are helpful in determining disorders like anemia, megaloblastosis, sickle cell anemia etc. Along with hemoglobin test, patients may also be required to undergo tests like RBC count, hemoglobin electrophoresis etc.
Low levels of hemoglobin can be brought back to normal by increasing intake of iron rich food or by consuming iron supplements. Extremely low levels of hemoglobin may sometimes need to be treated by performing blood transfusion.
