Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) is a radiology test that helps to study the internal organs of female reproductive system in detail. HSG is conducted in a radiology lab equipped with advanced medical tools. Injectable dye and a highly advanced scanning device capable of emitting radiation are essential to perform HSG test.
HSG is performed on outpatient basis and patients do not need to remain admitted into the hospital before or after the procedure. Certain pre-procedure instructions are issued to ensure that the test is conducted without any obstacles.

How is HSG test performed?
Iodine dye acts as a contrast medium and highlights the organs of female reproductive system. X-ray images are studied in order to diagnose various health conditions of female reproductive tract.
HSG helps in diagnosing the following disorders:
HSG helps in pinpointing the exact cause in case of female infertility. It is not only a primary diagnostic tool, but also helps to monitor health of patients who are already taking treatment for some female reproductive disorder.
Since X-ray images are used in case of HSG, deeper study of body tissues is not possible. Therefore, additional tests like USG may be advised to patients to obtain a clearer diagnosis.
HSG may lead to some complications like vaginal or abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding etc. However, these symptoms are temporary and recede after prompt treatment. Should they fail to respond to treatment, a doctor must be notified immediately.
Since HSG involves exposure to some amount of radiation, patients are advised not to undergo the test without a doctor's prescription.
