As mentioned before, insulin helps in keeping blood sugar levels in check. It stores excess sugar and releases it when the body needs it. High blood sugar is a complication that occurs when the body is unable to produce insulin. Similarly, low blood sugar is another complication occurring when the body is either unable to produce insulin or absorb the existing one properly.
Sometimes the body develops insulin resistance, meaning the tissues do not react to insulin. These conditions can be diagnosed and investigated through insulin testing. Also, when you experience symptoms such as palpitations, sweating, spinning feeling, that may be signs of low blood sugar. You may need insulin testing.
The doctor will instruct you to do midnight fasting depending on whether he wants to check fasting samples or when you are giving blood sample after a meal. Blood samples are taken from your forearm area. Hence, wearing a loose-fitting and comfortable outfit for the test is advisable. The sample is then sent to a laboratory for processing. Insulin testing is done in conjunction with Glucose Tolerance Test and C-peptide Tests. Further testing may be ordered by the doctor depending on the results.
High levels of insulin indicate a high possibility of the person suffering from Type-1 or Type-2 diabetes, obesity, insulin resistance, metabolic dysfunction, etc. Values less than 225mIU/L are considered as normal ranges of insulin in both men and women.
