Mammography Cost

Mammography or mammogram is an X-ray of the breasts to determine breast cancer or any other cyst/lump formation in them. Early detection is important, as a patient may need to undergo breast cancer surgery. Every woman in her 40s and ahead should undergo mammography once a year for protecting themselves from breast cancer. Those who have a family history of breast tumors are at a greater risk of getting them and should undergo screening regularly. Mammography can be useful in cases, where men experience symptoms that could suggest tumors or lumps in breast.

If you notice changes in appearance and color of breasts, nipple discharge, changes in and around the breast region, you should consult a gynecologist at the earliest. He/she may order a mammogram for you.

Diagnostic and screening mammograms are 2 types of this test. Diagnostic mammogram is when the doctor suspects breast cancer and he orders one for you for confirming or ruling it out. Screening mammograms are done in women who have a history of breast cancer in their families. Doctors normally recommend mammography when there is some pain in breasts or looks like some lump formation.

No special prior preparation is required for women undergoing a mammogram. They should not wear deodorants or perfumes, breast creams, cosmetics in the under-arm areas. Also, you need to inform the doctor if you are pregnant or a lactating mother. Show the results of any mammogram you may have undergone in the past.

Make sure to leave all metallic jewelry at home before going to the center for mammography. Wear loose-fitted clothing for the test. You are made to undress above the waist for imaging of breasts. You are made to sit/stand in such a way, that breasts can be placed on the X-ray plate. Multiple images are thus taken of the breasts for analyzing whether tumor is cancerous or non-cancerous.

Results generated by mammograms help the doctor in understanding whether there is breast cancer or there are just cysts inside. Calcifications caused by mineral deposits also are detected in a mammogram. It should be noted that abnormal results not necessarily mean that the woman has breast cancer. Additional mammograms or a biopsy may be ordered by the doctor for conclusive information.

Mammography FAQs
Q: What is mammography?
A: It is an imaging test which uses X-rays of low doses to evaluate the human breast for evidence of microcalcifications or masses.
Q: Why is mammography required?
A: A mammography is helpful in the detection of breast cancer as early as possible.
Q: When should women start getting screened for breast cancer?
A: As women turn 40, they should start having a mammography test once annually to keep a tab on their breast health. Once they turn 55 they should go for this test twice yearly.
Q: How is mammography done?
A: The patient is made to stand in front of a screen with her/his breasts pressed between two plates. An overhead X-ray machine then takes images of the breasts from different angles.
