Chronic cough that does not disappear, cough accompanied with blood, fever, lack of appetite, fatigue etc., are some of the symptoms for tuberculosis that should not be ignored. If you are experiencing above symptoms, opting for the Mantaux test becomes crucial.

Undergoing Mantaux test is simple and is carried out at your doctor's clinic. An injection containing tuberculin will be introduced within the top layer of your forearm skin. Tuberculin is an extract of tuberculosis bacterium obtained through laboratory procedures. After around 48 to 72 hours or so, you will be required to visit the doctor who will check you for any visible skin reactions.

If you have abnormal swelling on that particular area of your forearm skin, you perhaps are suffering from tuberculosis or have had the infection earlier. No pain or discomfort is associated with this test, except the slight tinge caused by the needle. The swelling that appears in cases where the infection has occurred, disappears normally within a few hours post investigation.

No prior preparation is required for the test. However, always inform your health care provider if you had under gone the same test earlier. Opting for the same test is not advisable and doctors will only order for a second test under very special circumstances. Besides, discussing other medicines you are using, or disorders you are suffering from is advised.
