Pleural Fluid Analysis is a pathology test performed to diagnose lung disorders. It is usually performed in a hospital or medical center which is well equipped with advanced medical techniques and equipment.
Pleural fluid is normally present between the two layers of lungs. It has a lubricating effect and allows the two layers of lung to move freely without any friction. Some health conditions cause an unhealthy built-up of pleural fluid, causing a restriction in the movement of lungs. This condition is known as pleural effusion. These health conditions can be detected with the help of pleural fluid analysis among other investigations.

Given below are symptoms which prompt a physician to advise pleural fluid analysis test to the patient:
- Sharp pain felt in the chest while breathing
- Incessant cough
- Associated fever
- Drastic weight loss
- Coughing up blood
Other health symptoms that have not been mentioned above may be indications of pleural fluid analysis test as well. This test can help to diagnose health disorders like tuberculosis, lung cancer, pneumonia. Pleural fluid analysis is one of the several tests advised to diagnose lung disorders. Others include X-Ray, MRI or CT scan of the chest.
Pleural fluid required for the test is collected by the method of pleural tapping. This procedure involves using a large gauge needle to pierce skin and muscles overlying the lungs. The needle is inserted between the two layers of the lung to aspirate some pleural fluid. This procedure may be done under the guidance of CT or MRI scan to avoid injury to lungs or neighboring organs. This procedure is known as thoracocentesis.
The procedure needs to be done with extreme precaution to avoid damaging the surrounding vital organs like heart, larynx etc. While performing pleural tapping, it is important to locate the ribs so that the needle may be passed through the skin between two adjacent ribs.
Pleural fluid collected during tapping is stored in a sterilized bottle and away from heat and light till the time of testing. The fluid is examined microscopically for presence of pus, white blood cells, red blood cells, cancer cells. The color and consistency of the fluid too tells a lot about the patient's probable diagnosis. These 2 parameters are measured by performing a macroscopic examination of the fluid.
Apart from pleural fluid analysis, patients may also be asked to undergo blood tests to check for internal inflammation, white cell count etc.
It is important to consult with a pulmonologist immediately, if pleural fluid analysis reveals abnormal results.
