Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) FAQs
Q: What is a pulmonary function test (PFT)?
A: Pulmonary function tests are diagnostic tests performed to determine the proper functioning of the lungs. The test evaluates the functioning of the lungs by measuring different parameters like lung volume, lung capacity, rate of flow, and gas exchange.
Q: When is this test ordered?
A: If you already have a condition that might interfere with the normal working of your lungs, the doctor might order this test to check for the progression of the disease or to see how well it’s responding to the ongoing treatment. The doctor may also order this test when a patient shows signs or symptoms that might indicate a pulmonary disorder.
Q: What can be diagnosed by a pulmonary function test?
A: Pulmonary function tests can help diagnose a plethora of disorders that include asthma, allergies, bronchitis, sarcoidosis, lung infections, asbestosis, pulmonary tumor, lung cancer, lung fibrosis etc. It can also help evaluate the weakness of chest wall muscles.
Q: What precautions should be taken before the test?
A: Avoid intake of a full course meal before the test as it can interfere with lung's ability to breathe at full capacity. Because caffeine opens up the airways and can affect the results of the test, beverages containing caffeine should also be avoided. You should not smoke at least one hour before the test.
Q: Is pulmonary function test risky?
A: PFTs are safe for people with no underlying or recently diagnosed medical conditions. PFTs possess some risk if you've recently had an eye or chest surgery. A recent history of heart attack may also be a risk factor. If you have asthma or respiratory infection, the condition may worsen due to the heavy breathing required for this test.
