To perform renal scan, radioactive material (radioisotope) is injected into the vein of the patient's arm. This material then travels down towards kidneys. Radioisotope releases gamma rays that can be detected from outside of the body by gamma scanner or gamma camera. Gamma camera scans renal region and checks how kidney processes the isotope. It works in synchronization with a computer to create high quality pictures on computer screen. This helps the doctor to detect any structural or functional abnormalities in germinating stages in the kidney. If diseases are detected in early stages, they can be treated easily along with reduction of pain and discomfort.
Procedure of renal scan may take forty-five minutes to three hours depending upon the reason why it is performed.
There are no major rules or precautions one has to follow prior to the renal scan procedure. You can consume a normal diet. Avoid consuming too spicy or fried food items as they take long time to digest. Also, do let your doctor know if you are on over-the-counter medications and about substances you are allergic to.
Some of the medications that could affect renal functioning are water pills, diuretics, ACE inhibitors and beta-blockers (used in case of heart conditions or high blood pressure) and Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) that include aspirin or ibuprofen.
Doctor may inject angiotensin for patients suffering from high blood pressure. Women who are pregnant or might become pregnant, need to inform doctor beforehand. Also, let doctor know if you are lactating, as radioactive substance may get contaminated with breast milk.
Renal scan is considered to be extremely safe. Radiation emitted by renal scan is even less than that of X-Ray radiation and is specific only to renal area. Also, the substance leaves the body through urine within 24 hours of the procedure. Low doses of radiation do not have long term negative impact on the body. Some minor side effects of radioisotope include redness, bleeding, swelling and discomfort. It is better to consult doctor if these symptoms persist and do not fade in a week.
