Rubella Test Cost

Rubella test helps in detecting presence of a virus of the same name that causes German measles. It is a blood test performed in pathology labs that are equipped with advanced tools and equipment.

Elevated levels of IgM Rubella require immediate medical attention.

A venous blood sample taken from a vein in the upper arm of the patient is used for checking for presence of Rubella. Presence of antibodies specifically fighting the rubella virus is an indication of ongoing or past infection. IgM and IgG are the two types of antibodies that are checked for during Rubella test.

IgM Rubella

IgM antibodies are produced as the first response of immune system to any infection. Presence of IgM antibodies against Rubella suggests an active or recent infection.

Active infection requires immediate medical intervention, or there could be inevitable health complications. Elevated levels of IgM Rubella may be accompanied by symptomatic indications of the disease. A reddish rash over the face, trunk or limbs, or all the three is the commonest symptom of rubella. Additionally, patients present with fever, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes.

IgM Rubella test yields positive result around 2-3 weeks after a person has been infected. This is also the period when symptoms begin developing. Typically, Rubella symptoms last for about a week before gradually subsiding.

IgG Rubella

Presence of IgG antibodies against Rubella virus indicates an old infection. But the immune system is still capable of producing antibodies for the same. Elevated IgG levels are not associated with symptoms of Rubella that have been mentioned earlier in the article.

Levels of IgM above 0.7 IU/ml and IgG above 7IU/ml indicates presence of Rubella infection.

It is mandatory for pregnant women to undergo the test as part of routine ante-natal health check up. Rubella infection during pregnancy may lead to fatal consequences and needs to be treated immediately.

Babies born to rubella infected mothers are also required to undergo this blood test in order to assess their health. Rubella positive patients display symptoms like red skin rash, itching, fever, malaise and fatigue. It is medically proven that the condition is highly contagious as long as the patient suffers from skin rash.

Anti viral medication, anti fever medication, hydrating skin lotion, are some of the medicines prescribed to Rubella patients.

In addition to Rubella test, patients may be required to undergo TORCH test, CRP test etc. Rubella is often confused with measles due to similarity of symptoms. Patients who present with acute symptoms may also be advised to undergo blood tests to check for levels of IgM antibodies against measles infection.
