Undergoing this test is a simple laboratory procedure. It involves collection of a considerable amount of sputum in a clean container. This container is mostly provided to you by your laboratory technician or doctor.

Prior to procedure, wash your mouth; however, do not use any mouth wash before collecting the sample. You need to take a deep breath and then cough out the sputum. Efforts must be taken to gather sputum from deep within the lungs. Once the sample is collected, take it to the nearest diagnostic center for further processes. Refrigeration of the sample may be allowed and you will be needed to discuss this with your doctor.

Sputum Cultures usually take at least 2 days to come up with results. However, you may be needed to wait for several weeks before your doctor comes up with a verdict.

Sputum culture test requires no special preparation or guidelines to be followed. However, if you are collecting the sample on your own, make sure that you gather a considerable amount of the sample. Small amounts may not be useful for culture purposes. Besides, taking the sample immediately to a lab is suggested as this reduces chances of contamination.
