Tuberculosis is a highly infective disease caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium Tuberculae. QuantiFERON T.B. gold in tube method and PCR are newer investigative methods of detecting T.B. infection in a patient. Blood sample taken from the patient is used as a specimen in both these tests. PCR test is known to show positive results even with stool sample at times.

Tuberculosis infection is not always detected while performing investigative tests. Sometimes, the tests maybe normal, but the infective agent is still present in dormant form. It can get activated anytime depending on the person's immunity, other health conditions, etc.
The Gold in tube test is one of the advanced tests which can even detect dormant T.B infection. It provides quicker results than the older methods of culture. This test is however known to present with negative result even in case of active T.B. Infection. Therefore, it must be used in conjunction with other investigative methods.
PCR tests helps in detection of the T.B bacteria by study and detection of DNA of the bacteria. There are many varieties of Mycobacterium. But each species has different genetic structure. This becomes the differentiating factor when many species of the bacteria are present in the specimen to be tested.
Both these tests are highly sensitive and give quick results. However, negative results in symptomatic patients or patients who have known history of T.B., should not be ignored. Other investigative tests are advised to be performed in order to formulate a treatment plan.
