Thyroid scan is a radiological test which is performed for detecting abnormalities of the thyroid gland like hyperthyroidisim, hypothyroidisim, goitre, thyroiditis, lumps or nodules of thryoid gland etc. The basis of this test is dependent upon the amount of iodine taken up by the thyroid gland. It is not a long procedure and does not need overnight hospitalization. Radioactive iodine is used in the procedure but it is not harmful in any manner.

Thryoid scan is a scintigraphy study. The person undergoing this procedure is required to consume an iodine preparation prior to the procedure. This preparation can be in liquid form or an iodine tablet. A waiting period of about 4 hours is involved during which the iodine will be taken up by the thyroid gland.
A specialized gamma camera is then used for imaging of the gland. The results of the test are based on the quantity of iodine absorbed. Higher the amount of iodine taken up by thyroid gland, higher is the activity of the gland in that particular area.
Thyroid test is repeated 24 hours after it is first performed to determine the remnant iodine in the thyroid gland. There are no major restrictions to be followed prior to, during or after the procedure. However, due to use of radioactive iodine, other people must take care to avoid contact with the patient's urine. The patient on his/her part can take care to reduce consumption of food high on iodine content prior to the test with the doctor's advice.
Thyroid scan is very helpful in diagnosing all of the disorders mentioned above. It also helps in diagnosing more severe conditions like thyroid cancer which can be treated by thyroid cancer surgery. Thyroid scan is known to be useful in cases where biopsy has failed to provide a concrete diagnosis.
