Vitamin E (also known as alpha tocopherol) is a fat soluble vitamin and a major antioxidant. It is found in foods such as leafy vegetables, fruits, poultry, eggs, oils, meat, cereals etc. Since vitamin E is fat soluble, it is best absorbed when a diet containing fat is consumed.

Vitamin E assists in the production of red blood cells and helps the body utilize vitamin K and helps maintain the reserves of vitamin A. It is also involved in keeping the blood vessels wide and hence, prevents blood clots. It also boosts immune system and helps fight off invading bacteria and viruses.

Vitamin E deficiency rarely occurs in people with good health. Certain diseases like liver diseases, cystic fibrosis or some genetic disorders affect the absorption of vitamin E, leading to low levels of Vitamin E in the blood and thereby its deficiency. Diet that is low in fat also leads to vitamin E deficiency.

Doctors order this test when the signs and symptoms associated with the deficiency manifest. These include night blindness, speech disorder, balance and co-ordination issues, muscle weakness, weakened immune system, chronic diarrhea, abnormal growth in infants, vision impairment, delayed reflexes, etc.

This test is carried out by the healthcare provider taking a sample of blood from the vein on the arm of the patient by a small puncture and the blood is collected in a small tube or vial. The sample is then analysed. You might feel a sting or there might be a bruise or a feeling of lightheadedness. Staying hydrated is advised. There are no other risks associated with this test.

Some medications like medicines containing estrogen, Vitamin A and C can affect the test results so it is important to let your healthcare advisor know about the type of medicines you take. Allergies and underlying medical conditions need to be informed so that the doctor can help you prepare for the test. Overnight fasting is required and the blood is drawn the next morning.

This test is also ordered when the patient is undergoing vitamin E supplemental therapy to monitor the progress of the therapy. If the test results are normal or a little high, no medical intervention is required. However, if the levels are low, it could point to a possibility of Abetalipoprotenemia and the doctor may advise this test to be done every 2 months or depending upon your condition.
