In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a medical procedure in which an egg from a female body and sperm from a male body are merged artificially in a laboratory environment. This treatment stands as one of the most effective solutions for complex infertility cases.
Couples who opt for IVF procedure can have their own eggs and sperms for the procedure. However, many a time, they may even require egg or/and sperm donors, according to their health or fertility status.
The IVF cost in India varies from Rs. 80,000/- to Rs. 250,000/- depending on city, hospital and doctor. Some doctors have good reputation for positive results and hence have higher IVF procedure prices. Here is a list of IVF Treatment Costs in various cities of India.

The IVF treatment procedure involves several important steps. It initiates with super ovulation or stimulation. Under normal condition, any female body produces one egg per month. However, during this medical process, special fertility drugs are used, that stimulate follicles to generate multiple eggs at a time. In order to regulate hormone levels within the body, regular trans vaginal ultrasounds are carried out.
Super ovulation takes around two weeks time. Thereafter, egg retrieval or harvesting is carried out. At an appropriate time, when the doctors can anticipate that the eggs produced are in a position to get released through the fallopian tube, the eggs are pulled out of the ovaries.
The procedure is carried out through a needle that is attached to a suction device and then inserted through vaginal walls. The entire process is carried out under sedation medicines, and therefore, the pain is not felt by women undergoing the process.
Simultaneously, the male partner ejaculates sperms, and the most active ones are chosen for merging or insemination. The entire process of insemination takes place in a controlled chamber having the optimum environment for a harmonious merging.
However, if the sperm count is low and not in a position to penetrate the egg, a process of ICSI - intra cytoplasmic sperm injection is carried out. ICSI is nothing but a medical procedure in which the sperms are directly injected into the egg.
Three days after the insemination has been carried out, the embryos formed are placed inside the uterus via the vagina. This procedure medically termed as Embryo Transfer involves less time and is painless. For couples suffering from genetic disorders, the procedure may be carried out 5 days after insemination.
Post embryo transfer, women are required to take some hormonal medicines and associated drugs. Within two weeks, you will be required to go for a pregnancy test to determine if the IVF procedure you underwent was successful enough.
