Mohs surgery consumes only a couple of hours or so. It is only when the tumor is large, the treatment extends to two or more days. No anesthesia that can put you to sleep is required in this process. Doctors usually numb your skin so that you do not feel the pain during surgery.
The technique is usually a repetition of a single process. Surgeons remove the visible tumor and a thin layer of skin along with it. This takes about 30 minutes for normal sized tumors.
Your surgeon will put this layer under microscope to check the amount of cancerous growth on it. Usually this layer carries mild symptoms of cancer growth and therefore the skin layer next to it is also removed. This process is carried out until no signs of cancer are seen on successive layers of skin.
After the process, the wound is covered by skin grafts or flaps from other sections. Care needs to be taken to match the texture and color of the graft with that of the operated area. The wound usually gets cured on its own, few days after the operation.
Cost of MOHS surgery in India ranges between INR 60,000 to INR 2,00,000.
Mohs surgery is also known as chemosurgery. The cure rate recorded till date approximates to about 99%. This technique proves to be more beneficial over other treatment options as it involves the removal of small amount of skin tissues. It also results in smaller scars that heal quickly.
