3 Tesla v/s 1.5 Tesla MRI
What is the difference between 1.5 Tesla MRI Scan and 3 Tesla MRI Scan?
Both 3 Tesla and 1.5 Tesla MRI scans are useful in their own respect. However, there are certain parameters that make them different from each other. Let us now look at what these differences are.
Strength of Magnetic Field
Procedure of performing both types of MRI scans is same. The patient is made to lie in a chamber within which a magnetic field having either 1.5 Tesla or 3 Tesla strength has been generated. The interaction between magnetic waves and radio waves takes place and creates images of the patient’s internal organs. These are used to provide a diagnosis about the patient’s health condition.
Reason for recommendation
3 Tesla MRI scan, is a very accurate diagnostic test. The clarity of reports is very high. Therefore, this scan is utilized very frequently when smaller sized body tissues are to be examined. Small aneurysms, tiny bones in the body, smaller muscles are usually examined using this method.
1.5 Tesla MRI scans are known to be very beneficial in case of prostate gland examination and in general examination of larger tumors. In cases where 3 Tesla MRI is contra-indicated, or its results could be doubtful, 1.5 Tesla scan may be used. These conditions include when the scan is done for patients who have an implanted device in their body like pacemaker, chemoport etc., patients who are pregnant, patients who have metal clips after surgery etc. If doctors feel that it might be inadvisable to expose these patients to a magnetic field of 3 Tesla intensity, then the procedure is performed using 1.5 Tesla scanner.
Both types of MRI scans are equally beneficial, sometimes one more than the other. Depending on the patient’s health condition and doctor’s requirement, it is decided whether the patient requires 3 Tesla MRI or 1.5 Tesla MRI.
MRI is a relatively safer procedure to perform in comparison to X-Ray and CT Scan. It provides greater accuracy as compared to sonography. These reasons make it a more preferred form of diagnostic investigation.
