What You Need to Know About Thyroid Disorders

Thyroid disorders could extend from non-dangerous goiter to a lethal cancer. Since the thyroid gland impacts most of the metabolic processes, its well-being is of utmost importance. Walk through this enlightening episode with Dr. Chandra Shekhar where you can learn much more than just the prevention of thyroid disorders.

What are thyroid hormones?

Thyroid hormones are the ones produced by an endocrine gland called thyroid gland. The common hormones produced by thyroid gland are thyroxine, i.e., tetraiodothyronine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), and calcitonin (which helps in calcium homeostasis). In a normal thyroid test, doctors also suggest to go for the testing of another hormone called TSH, i.e., thyroid stimulating hormone, which regulates the functioning of thyroid gland.

What is the normal range for TSH?

The normal range for TSH is 0.5-6.0 mIU/L. Based on the initial judgment when you get your TSH result, you look for further investigation of thyroid functioning which involves commonly heard as T3 and T4 hormones produced by thyroid gland. Once TSH is low, T3 and T4 are high and when TSH is high, T3 and T4 are low.

T3 and T4 being further classified or sub-classified as ‘total T3’ and ‘free T3’, ‘total T4’ and ‘free T4’. Most of the hormones such as T3 and T4 produced by thyroid gland and circulated in the blood are bonded to different types of proteins present in the blood, hence they remain in the bonded form. Only the free forms that are less than 1% of the total hormones present are the ones which are active in the body known as ‘bioactive forms’.
