Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) is secreted from the pituitary gland. It acts on the thyroid gland and controls all its functions. The production and release of T3 and T4 is under complete control of TSH. T3 and T4 are the two hormones secreted by thyroid gland. Changes in levels of TSH directly affect the levels of T3 and T4.
Indications of undergoing TSH test are mentioned below:
- Sudden weight changes
- Hairfall
- Altered sleeping habits
- Irregular pattern of digestion
- Irregular menstruation
Collectively, these symptoms point towards thyroid gland dysfunction. Further investigation is required to initiate proper medical treatment.
Levels of TSH in a healthy adult are between 0.5-5.0 mIU/L. However, levels of TSH alone cannot determine thyroid gland dysfunction. Patients may be required to undergo T3 and T4 test in order to obtain a confirmed diagnosis. Some patients may also undergo brain scans to rule out pituitary gland dysfunction.
TSH is formed as part of routine health checkup or by patients who are suspected to be suffering from thyroid disorders. It is also an excellent prognostic tool to monitor health of patients undergoing treatment for thyroid disorders. TSH is often part of routine ante-natal checkup for pregnant women who have suffered from thyroid disorders in the past.
It is advisable for patients to undergo the test only after consulting with an endocrinologist. Patients have to present with a valid prescription without which pathology labs do not perform TSH test. Patients are required to visit a pathology lab for the test, or a lab technician could visit them at home to collect a blood sample. Instructions are provided to patients regarding diet to be followed before the test. Patients who are on medication for a pre-existing thyroid disorder may be asked to alter the dosage of said medication till the test is completed.
Test results are usually available within 6-8 hours after a blood sample has been taken from the patient. Abnormal test results must be reported to an endocrinologist immediately. Prompt treatment is advisable to curb the underlying health condition at the earliest.
