Disorders like Deep Vein Thrombosis, stroke and Pulmonary Embolism can be ruled out through a D-Dimer test. When a person shows symptoms of deep vein thrombosis or Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC), the doctor can get relevant information through a D-Dimer test. Symptoms may include anything from swelling in legs, increased heart-rate, pain in legs, difficulty in breathing, vomiting, muscle pain, bleeding gums, nausea etc. D-Dimer test is ordered in conjunction with platelet count, blood tests, fibrinogen and prothrombin time. Imaging tests for detecting suspected blood clots include ultrasound, pulmonary angiography and CT angiography.

D-Dimer test is done through a basic blood sample taken from a vein in the arms. A negative test result means no presence of blood clots or any condition suggesting the same. On the other hand, a positive result also doesn't indicate presence of blood clots. However, further testing is required, if there are positive results. Elevated levels of this protein in blood also may be as a result of pregnancy, major surgeries, liver diseases and few cancer types. Prolonged periods of inactivity and congenital blood clotting disorders put you at higher risks of clots.

D-Dimer test is ordered by doctors in patients who are on treatments for blood clots. The results help them to know whether the anticoagulation medication is doing its work. That helps the doctor to know if the medication needs to be continued or discontinued.

It is important to note that D-Dimer test cannot confirm or establish presence of the disorders mentioned above, it can only rule their possibility.

D Dimer Test FAQs
Q: What is D-dimer test also known as?
A: Fibrin degradation fragment and fragment D-dimer.
Q: Why is D-dimer test ordered?
A: To examine for major blood clotting problems and assess the amount of a substance released after the breaking up of a blood clot.
Q: What is the normal range for D-dimer test?
A: <250 mcg/L.
Q: Which conditions could be ruled out using D-dimer test?
A: Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), pulmonary embolism (PE), and deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
Q: Could a positive result only mean blood clots?
A: No. D-dimer levels could be positive also due to heart disease, pregnancy, high lipid profile, liver disorder, age over 80 years, and recent trauma or surgery.
