PT (Prothrombin Time) Test Cost

A test conducted to measure the time taken by your blood plasma to clot is called a prothrombin time test. It helps to detect the cause for abnormal bleeding, the effect of warfarin (a blood thinning medicine) and to check the low levels of Vitamin K.

A sample of your blood plasma is collected for the test and the time taken for your blood to coagulate after a cut or wound is noted. Patients with bleeding disorder need to undergo regular tests to evaluate blood clotting time during their treatment. The given list can be helpful to locate an appropriate center for diagnosis near you.

Whenever you are injured, the part of the body that experiences a cut starts to bleed. After some time, the oozing blood suddenly begins to thicken and cover your cut. The part of the blood that covers your wound is nothing but your blood platelets. A soft, temporary layer is made out of these platelets that temporarily wraps your wound. It also ceases the pathway of blood from oozing out.

Stronger the blood clotting mechanism, faster is the cover produced around your entire wound. There are 12 plasma proteins (also known as coagulation factors) that work together to create this covering layer over your external wound. The substance made by these 12 plasma proteins is termed as fibrin.

Hemophilia is a bleeding disorder that disturbs the coagulation process of blood plasma proteins. In such case, the seal is either made incorrectly or not made at all. Vitamin K deficiency can alter the formation of proteins to form fibrin. Other factors like liver anomalies and few drugs can also affect blood clotting phenomena.

Patients must have an idea that they may be suffering from a bleeding disorder. Here are some symptoms that can be helpful. If you experience any of these, visit your healthcare provider right away.

The symptoms of bleeding disorders are as follows:

Uncontrolled bleeding – When you get a cut and it continues to bleed for a long time even though you applied pressure at the site of your wound, you may be suffering from a bleeding disorder.

Blood in urine – Blood in urine is seen in cases of hematuria. This is an another bleeding disorder that is quite serious and needs to be treated well.

Nosebleeds – Nosebleeds aren't serious, although if frequent, you must contact your physician immediately.

Easy bruising – Bruising is a result of ruptured capillaries right under your skin due to an accident or trauma. During accidents, your body areas are exposed to a sudden punch that bursts tiny blood vessels (called capillaries) under the surface of your skin, resulting into one or more bruises. However, if bruises occur very easily without any major traumatic incident, it may indicate that you have a bleeding disorder.

Heavy periods – Heavy periods can be due to uterine issues or problems related to reproductive system. Women are advised to undergo a complete treatment course to fix such conditions that can affect women's basic health. PT test is usually done along with APTT test.

PT (Prothrombin Time) Test FAQs
Q: What is prothrombin?
A: Also known as “factor II”, it is one of the essential plasma proteins required in the blood clotting process. Along with other clotting factors, it is made by the liver with the help of vitamin K.
Q: What could be diagnosed through PT test?
A: Low levels of vitamin K, hereditary bleeding disorders such as hemophilia caused due to low levels of clotting factors, abnormal bleeding, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), safety percentage before any surgery, liver's functionality, and progress of certain medications like warfarin and blood-thinners.
Q: What could change the prothrombin time?
A: Activity change of the clotting factors, blood-thinners, lack of clotting factors, excessive use of clotting factors, inhibitors and other substances, and low levels of clotting factors.
Q: What are the normal figures of PT and INR?
A: PT: 11-13 seconds and INR: 0.8-1.1 seconds.
Q: What are the symptoms of bleeding disorders?
A: Nosebleeds, presence of blood in urine, easy bruising, swollen joints, unstoppable bleeding, and heave menses.
