FNAC is an abbreviation for Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology. FNAC is a diagnostic procedure in which a needle is inserted on the raised part of the body to extract a small amount of tissue to perform analysis under a microscope. Lumps on the neck, breast, or any other part of the body that appear without a reason and do not recede even after a long time, can be malignant. If you notice any bump on your body and could not fathom the reason for the same, the doctor may prescribe you a FNAC test.

Before the test, you have to stop any medications, especially aspirin and anti-inflammatory drugs. The number of days you have to abstain from consuming medication is best decided by the doctor. Fasting has to be done before the test as per the doctor's instructions. The pathologist will check your vital signs such as pulse-rate, blood pressure and body temperature before the test.
The skin to be operated on is cleaned with an anti-septic solution. A small thin gauze is placed over that area before injecting numbing medication intradermally. Thereafter, a thin needle is used to insert the medication inside the skin. The needle that is attached to a syringe also has a vacuum for collecting the tissue in syringe. This way the affected tissue is collected multiple times depending on how much is required for aspiration.
Ultrasound or X-ray may also be used for locating exact location of lump. After the tissue is collected, the technician will place a bandage over that area. He then checks for bacteria or virus under the microscope in the specimen and discusses the result with your doctor.
Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology is a histopathology blood test. It is useful in detecting cancers of breast, lungs, ovaries and throat. Non-cancerous diseases like tuberculosis, bacterial and viral infections, can also be diagnosed through an FNAC test. Results depend on the site of aspiration and the disease the doctor was looking to establish or rule out. In event of a non-definitive or a less clear result, a surgical biopsy is ordered. The results thus help the doctor in deciding whether the tumors are cancerous or non-cancerous and if any treatment is required henceforth. FNAC is an effective and reliable testing technique for people who may possibly have cancer.
