Gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) is an enzyme in your blood. It is present in liver, brain, kidney, pancreas and heart. The Gamma GT (GGTP) test is quite sensitive to damage of liver, and unexplained, unexpected elevations can be quite common with it. The main culprit for this condition is alcohol consumption. Gamma GT test is usually ordered by doctor to diagnose liver diseases. It is also useful for knowing presence of bone diseases if any, when ordered in conjunction with other tests like Alanine aminotransferase (ALT), Alkaline phosphatase (ALP), Aspartate aminotransferase (AST). Symptoms like darker urine, yellowish eyes and skin, stomach pain, vomiting, jaundice, reduced appetite, are few signs that may prompt the doctor to order a GGT test for you to look into the possibility of liver complications.
Midnight fasting has to be done before the day of Gamma GT test. The doctor would also ask you to discontinue certain medications that can affect test results if you are on any of them. Birth control pills are one of them. Make sure not to drink any type of alcohol on the day before giving blood samples for this test.
The doctor performs a blood test for measuring levels of Gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) in your blood. Blood is usually drawn from veins in the insides of the elbow. The sample is then studied under a microscope. You may feel a little lightheaded but that passes in a few minutes.
0 to 30 IU/L is the normal range of gamma GT levels for adults. Higher levels of Gamma GT may indicate liver cirrhosis, liver cancer, pancreatic disorders, diabetes, inflammation in liver, fatty liver disease etc. Bone diseases also can be detectable through a gamma GT test if there are abnormal levels in the results.
