HbA1c shows the amount of glucose bound to hemoglobin for the past 3 months from the time the test is performed.
Indications of HbA1c test:
- Diabetes Mellitus
- Gestational diabetes
Patients are required to observe certain dietary restrictions as advised by their physician before undergoing HbA1c test. A venous blood sample is withdrawn from a vein in the patient's upper arm for this test. Levels of HbA1c are measured using highly calibrated instruments.
Normal levels of HbA1c in a healthy adult should be between 4 to 5.6%. Levels above 5.6% up to 6.4% in a healthy person indicate a risk of developing diabetes. Patients falling in this category should follow a healthy diet and exercise schedule in order to avoid developing diabetes. Levels above 6.5% of HbA1c indicate onset of diabetes which requires prompt medical treatment.
HbA1c test is a great way to monitor health in known diabetics as well as patients who are at high risk of developing the condition. Other tests which may be advised with this test include blood sugar test, urine sugar test, oral glucose tolerance test, etc. In addition to this, diagnostic scans to examine the kidneys, pancreas and retina may also be advised to the patient.
